It’s been so long since I’ve done a food waste post! We are just going to pretend that the past few weeks haven’t happened and I didn’t throw out SO.MUCH.FOOD. We are starting with a blank slate this week.
First up is a box of vanilla wafers. I don’t remember buying them and have no idea how long they have been in my pantry. I found them last night when I needed a clothes pin to keep the cat food bag closed. I tried them and they were incredibly stale. I guess I could make banana pudding, but I don’t have any of the ingredients other than the wafers. And there is a lot of them left. I like banana pudding, but not enough to eat an entire 9×13 pan of it. So these went into the trash.
I also wasted about a quarter of a loaf of apple cinnamon banana bread. I was really excited about the recipe, but it did not turn out how I expected and the flavor wasn’t great. I just kept ignoring it until it started to grow some mold. I threw it out and now I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to force myself to eat the second loaf that’s in the freezer.
What did you waste this week?

Sometimes boring bread is better toasted? Warm, with butter or peanut butter or jam, a variety of sins of dullness may be hidden.
You’re not, you’re going to take it to work and foist it on the others.
Or top with nutella.
This is a terrific idea. Why didn’t I think of Nutella? YUM.
Visiting from The Frugal Girl! I had some celery that got away from me and ….. always bananas. Oh well.
That’s not terrible! Do you put your (peeled) bananas in the freezer? You should! That’s how I make banana bread. If I have a banana get away from me, I just peel it and throw it in the freezer. Once I have 3 or 4, I make banana bread or muffins!
I do the same thing! They’re good for smoothies, too. Some weeks we eat all the bananas right away, and other weeks they languish on the counter until I finally peel them and toss them in the freezer…
“I like banana pudding, but not enough to eat an entire 9×13 pan of it.”
how bad is it that I like banana pudding enough to eat an entire 9×13 pan of it and probably lick the pan clean? :/
Me too. ><
Ooh, bread pudding!
Ok, so last night I was making your cinnamon roll cake (which, by the way, is amazingly delicious and will SOOOOO go in the repertoire), and I open the oven to find a whole butternut squash, molding. MOLD! On a yummy butternut squash! We think we forgot about it last weekend when we were cooking (we only cook on the weekends), so that sucker sat in there all week and grew yucky. Gross.
Sad. 🙁 It happens though. I’m glad you like the cake! I should make it again; it’s super delicious.
Try using it in bread pudding! I’ve had some delicious bread pudding made with banana quick bread, and this sounds like it might work well too.
Oooh, next time you find a box of stale cookies or crackers, make bread crumbs! So many amazing things you can “Bread” with sweet crumbs 😉
Nutella sounds like aplan. OR nutella AND peanut butter. Or just peanut butter. OR MAKE FRENCH TOAST WITH IT. Calories don’t count on weekends. Just sayin’
