It’s been a while since I’ve done a food waste Friday post, but in that time, I’ve only had one week where things were really terrible.  I can’t remember all that I threw away, but I do remember it being really bad.

This week wasn’t too terrible.  I had some leftover pasta that wasn’t enough to make a meal out of and I never got around it eating it as a snack and I lost half of a red onion in the back of the refrigerator.  I meant to cut it up and freeze it, but it got hidden behind something and when I found it this morning it had started to sprout and felt really soft to the touch.

Other than that, the fridge is looking very empty so I’m pleased!

Did you waste any food this week?

Oh geeze. I have food waste coming out of my ears this week. We had to toss out some leftover Cassoulet. TFH got it out of the freezer then "forgot" about it for two weeks. It was green.

And then I keep buying these cute, small heads of lettuce. They look great and for 75 cents, who can pass them up? Well..I SHOULDNT BUY THEM. I've now killed two of them.

Plus we have two pomegranates from who knows when (TFH's fault again). And I could probably scrounge up some condiments that need to be tossed.

I guess that wasn't that bad.. but I hate food waste 🙁

This is the week of moldy foods at chez Elizabeth.  I found some cheese, stuck way back in the refrigerator that was growing some very nice specimens of penicillin.  I *think* I bought that cheese when I moved into my house.  Two months ago.
Oops.
I also had some grapes that never tasted great to begin with so I kept avoiding them until they were starting to get a little fuzzy.

It could have been worse I suppose.  At least I didn’t let any leftovers go to waste.

Good job! There is nothing worse than fruit that tastes off. I feel your pain!

Oh, I hate that…when you buy produce and it doesn't taste good.

Sometimes, you can throw stuff like that into a smoothie and be none the wiser as far as taste goes.

Cooking for one has been a challenge so far.  It’s hard to figure out how much I can actually eat or how many days I’m going to want to eat the leftovers.
Which is why this week, I’m proud to report…

It’s a no waste week!!
I haven’t had a no waste week since I moved, so I’m super excited!  Yay me!
How did you do this week?  Any food waste?

I was so hoping it would be a no-waste week, but I think my expectations on what I can and can’t eat in a week are still a little high.  My fridge is still full of leftovers because of some unplanned lunches (out for a birthday and a drug rep brought lunch to work) and an impromptu movie date with my mom (we saw Country Strong, which I highly recommend).  I still have some lentils leftovers (that’s what’s for lunch), some pasta with spinach cream sauce (that will be my dinner), and I also found some soup from last week hiding in the back this morning.  I haven’t checked it yet, so I may end up having to add it to this week’s food waste.
Despite having all these leftovers, the only thing I actually have to throw away is the last bit of the lemon vinaigrette.  I made it on Sunday and it just didn’t look right this morning, so down the drain it went.  Hopefully, nothing else will go bad and this can be a fairly light waste week.

I'd say that's a very respectable week. Go you!

Hmm… I had to throw out about 1/3 c. of curry rice. TFH brought that dish to work, and came home with 1/3 C. OF CURRY RICE. I'm all for stopping eating when you aren't hungry, but really?By the time I saw it, it was too late.

Also need to keep an eye on homemade bread and some apricots… can you eat apricots fresh? I've only ever had them dried (fail).

I haven’t posted a Food Waste Friday post in two weeks! Oops.

I wish that meant we didn’t have any food waste, but, of course, that isn’t the case. Sigh.

First, two weeks ago, I threw out a large amount of dill and about half a package of thyme. Usually, I’m pretty good about finding places to use leftover herbs, but the dill went bad way faster than I thought it would and I ran out of recipes to use with thyme. And then I forgot about it.

This past week we had to throw out some pasta with sauce that just never got eaten. With all the Thanksgiving leftovers, it got lost in the shuffle and just needed to go in the trash. I didn’t get a picture, but it was only about a serving.

I’m happy to report that all of our Thanksgiving leftovers were eaten and so far I haven’t wasted anything else! The refrigerator is empty, so I’m looking forward to a potential no waste week next week.

Ha. Your pasta waste sounds exactly like my leek soup waste. Darn the holiday leftovers.

Well hello Friday!  It’s so nice to see you again!
This has been a bad week in terms of food waste at our house.  I was hoping for a better week after last week’s debacle, but, alas, it could not be so.
This week we wasted:
  • 4 servings of butternut pasta from last week (none of us really liked it)
  • 3 wheat tortillas I had forgotten about.
I was able to salvage a few things including some sweet potatoes and I plan on making a small batch of apple muffins to rescue some mealy apples.  Next week’s menu is also dedicated to eating out of the pantry/freezer/refrigerator, so hopefully that will help eliminate our food waste for next week.
What did you waste this week?

We were really good about eating leftovers from this week, but somehow some leftover pork tenderloin from several weeks ago resurfaced and needed to make an emergency trip to the garbage.  I didn’t get a picture of it before we threw it away.

I was able to rescue most of an onion that had started going bad.  I’ve had lots of experience with rotten onions so I was very glad to save this one before the rest when bad.

It’s another no waste week for us!  There were lots of leftovers this week, but thanks to a leftover night and eating leftovers for lunch, we were able to eat through everything that we had.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and is looking forward to the first Saturday of college football season!

No food waste this week!  We’ve all been pretty diligent in watching what’s in the fridge this week.  Everyone’s had leftovers for lunch at least once this week, and (so far) no whole ingredients have gone bad.

As always, there are things to watch out for, but I planned this weekend and next week’s menus around the food that we have in the fridge, freezer, and pantry.

We did not have any waste. I think that is because I am buying less as I harvest from produce from the garden.

This week was a pretty bad one in terms of food waste. It was also a bad week in terms of menu planning and cooking frugally. Note to self: when going out of town, plan ahead and plan accordingly!

This week we wasted:

  • Most of 16 oz container of strawberries that had been sitting in the fridge for an unspecified amount of time
  • About ¼ cup of some very sad, dried out parsley
  • 3 green onions
  • Almost an entire package of pita bread that I had forgotten about

Of everything, I’m most upset about the pita. I love sandwiches made with pita bread and I meant to make some pita chips before it got so hard, but I forgot. We bought some wraps at the store today. Hopefully they won’t meet the same fate as the pita bread.

Another Friday…another no waste week!! I’m really getting the hang of only cooking what we need and making sure that the family eats what’s in the fridge. We have a ton of leftovers right now, so I’m harassing my dad to eat the leftovers at every opportunity. Hopefully we’ll eat them all this weekend and have another no waste week again next week!

As far as I can tell, we have zero food waste this week! Whoohoo!! I’ve been a little more mindful of our leftovers, so there is nothing in the fridge in danger of going bad immediately. I can’t claim that next week will be the same; leftovers from Wednesday and Thursday’s dinners need to be eaten! But for now, yay me!

Great job! You can always freeze leftovers and use them on a night when you don't have time to cook.

I’m trying to make my family understand how important it is to cut down on our food waste; that every time we through away food, we are throwing away money.  Alas, this has not been an easy task.  However, this week’s waste wasn’t near as bad as it’s been in the past.
What we threw away:

Some hummus that had developed a weird smell and some cool whip that no one could remember when it was purchased (plus it had some sort of strange liquid at the bottom).  Mom also threw away a small bit of pasta salad left over from last Friday and some broccoli from Monday before I could get a picture.  Not sure what was wrong with it or why we didn’t eat it.  Must do better next week!
I’m going out of town this weekend, so Mom’s on her own to grocery shop.  I have set a goal of spending $100 or less each week on groceries and we’ve been doing okay.  This week’s grocery list is pretty short, so I”m interested in seeing how much gets spent.  Especially when I’m not around to curb any impulse bakery buys. 🙂
How did you do on your food waste this week?  Hop on over to The Frugal Girl and check out why not wasting food is so important!

Not bad for your first week! It's hard to make other people living in the house understand about food waste at first, I've noticed, but they'll get there! 🙂
