It’s Time for ALA!

in conferences, librarianship

Friday morning I will be heading to New Orleans to attend the American Libraries Association’s annual conference.  In case you aren’t aware, the ALA conference is the largest library conference in the world.  That’s a lot of cardigans and sensible shoes.

I sure hope New Orleans is ready for 20,000 librarians to descend on it.

I sort of forgot to plan a nice long ALA post, so I wanted to direct your attention to my 10 tips for having a better conference experience that I wrote last year.  If I had to reiterate any of the tips it would be to wear comfortable shoes and to have a good time (it is New Orleans after all).

As a medical librarian, I don’t expect to get much out of this year’s conference, but I am looking forward to four different things.

  • What’s Cooking at ALA cooking demonstrations
  • MBA for Librarians series
  • “What the Library Did for Romance” where one of the presenters is one of my favorite bloggers, Sarah Wendell of Smart Bitches, Trashy Books fame.
  • The library school reunion

I’m really excited about the reunion because there are lots of people going to ALA that I haven’t seen in a year or two, so I’m looking forward to catching up and seeing everyone.

Don’t forget!  I’m on the panel for the Emerging Trends Discussion Group which is taking place on Saturday (June 25) at 8:00 in the convention center, room 245. If you are going to be at ALA and don’t have anything scheduled, I hope you’ll come by and watch me try to answer questions about management.  Should be fun. 🙂

If you are going to be in town for ALA, feel free to tweet me or email me (lifelovelibrarianship (at) gmail (dot) com) and we can try to meet up.  I’ll be in NOLA Friday through Monday afternoon.  I look forward to meeting some of you there!

Sounds like fun! My dream job is to be a librarian. I love New Orleans. It’s such a fun city. Can’t wait to hear about what a great time you had.

Being a librarian IS pretty awesome. I’ll have to write a nice long post about the trip when I get home.
