Life and Times of a New Librarian: Series Revisited Recap

I really hope you enjoyed the last four weeks as much I did.  I really enjoyed reading Megg, Jenny, Lauren, and Lydia‘s updates on where they are, what they are doing, and if they are happy.  Catching up with old friends and learning all about their lives is something I really enjoy and one of the reasons I love going to conferences.

Everyone has had a different journey.  Megg moved across the country to a city overpopulated with librarians and is now working a miserable office job.  She had initially considered the idea of going back to school so she could become a school media specialist, but has since changed her mind.  She’s now pursuing other options.

Jenny spent years looking for the right job and has applied and interviewed for more jobs than anyone I know.  She persevered and now has a terrific job as the library director in a small town.  Her job came with housing and she was generous enough to share some picture with us!

Lauren, who was still in library school for her first post, fought back fears of hiring freezes to end up exactly where she wanted to be – at a federal library.  Every time I talk to her she seems incredibly happy and in love with her job.

Lydia had a rough path involving a difficult first job, but did the right thing in quitting to devote her time (and sanity) to finding the right job.  Her current job at a technical college may not be the perfect job forever, but it’s a great job for now and she’s excited about her job duties and the tasks ahead.

As far as I go, I’m still in my first job as a solo hospital librarian.  I’ll hit the two year mark in May which is when I told myself I could start thinking about looking for something else and moving on and up.  I may not be content with my job all the time, but I loathe the thought of leaving my pretty house after only a year and moving someplace new.  So we’ll see what the future holds for me in the next 7 months or so.

So that’s it for this series folks!  I really hope you enjoyed catching up with these lovely ladies.  And this brings me to the next thing…

Are you a new librarian or current library school student?  Would you like to guest post about your current job (or lack thereof) situation?  I’m looking for at least four new librarians or library school students who like to share their experiences with my readers.  If you would like to guest post, please email me at lifelovelibrarianship (at) gmail (dot) com!  I can’t wait to hear from you!
