My Trip West in Pictures

in Adventures, life, love

Some of you might remember that two weeks ago I took a big risk and flew out to San Diego to see a boy.  The trip wasn’t all that great, but I took some pretty good (for iPhone pictures at least) pictures and I thought I would share a few with you.

We went to visit the San Diego zoo which I would say was the highlight of the trip.  I love zoos and this one most definitely did not disappoint.

I love the elephants.  I have tons of pictures of them (I think there were four out and about when we passed by) but I was so impressed by the size of these tusks!  Can I get a Roll Tide from anyone?

Obviously, the lion was behind a fence, but I just had to share this picture anyway.  He looks so proud and serene hanging out in the shade.  I also have a really funny shot of the leopard in the cage next door that looks like it’s trying to figure out how to eat the child standing in front of the window.  It’s a bad shot, so I won’t post it, but trust me when I say it was a great moment.  The leopard looked genuinely distressed that he couldn’t figure out how to get to the kid.

The zoo has 5 or 6 giraffes and they were all out eating, which was pretty exciting.  They share a space with llamas (in the background) and I really like that because I like to see animals interacting (or not interacting) they way they would in the wild.  Makes for a more realistic experience in my book.

This kangaroo was having an awesome time scratching its back.  It reminded me of Caty when she does this to try to get me to scratch her belly.  We also saw koalas, which was amazing, but they were all sleeping so I didn’t get any good pictures.

Of everything I saw at the zoo, this was by far the coolest.  Yes, that’s a cheetah.  On a leash.  Walking with a person.  And a dog.   This is part of a zoo program that allows closer interaction with some of the animals.  They match cheetahs and wolves with dogs and train them together.  It was super cool to hear about and we got so lucky passing by at just the right time to see them walking across the street.  You can read more about the program here.

We also went down to the beach in La Jolla and saw where the seals lay on the rocks.  There are divers in the water too and the seals don’t seem to mind as they swim past.  I guess they are used to it because I watched one swim right under a pair of divers.  I also watched one bull push another seal into the water.  Pretty excellent interaction.

He took me on base so I could see the jets.  That was a completely awesome experience and I have TONS of amazing shots.  I’m not sure what I can and can’t post, so I’ll just leave you with this one.  But know that it was really cool.

Even though things didn’t go exactly as planned, it was still a good trip and I got to visit a new place.  I love to travel, so it was a fun experience and I’m glad I went.  At least I got some blogging material out of it, right? 🙂

The San Diego Zoo is awesome (though I haven’t been since I was a kid) and that picture of the cheetah is crazy! What an awesome zoo program.

It was such a cool thing. I would love to do the backstage pass tour and hear more about the program. What an amazing job that would be!

You should. It’s a really cool place to visit. I could never live there, but it was fun to see.
