Summer Reading

in books, summer reading

Summer is rapidly approaching. Well, it is here in Alabama (otherwise known as the most humid place on earth). For most of you, there’s still another month left of school and the weather really won’t be getting hot for another few weeks. But around here, school is wrapping up and it’s expected to hit 90° this week.

Since it feels so summery outside, it makes me think of summer reading. Last summer I set out to make myself more well-rounded as far as reading goes, and I think I did a pretty good job. This summer, I’m looking to do the same as well as read some really good books. Unfortunately, I don’t know what I want to read this summer! Therefore, I’m asking you, dear readers, for book suggestions. Please email me or leave a book suggestion (and author if you can remember) in the comments. I am looking forward to seeing your suggestions!

To give you a better idea of what I like to read, here are some of the books I’ve read most recently:

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

Savor the Moment by Nora Roberts

It Sucked and Then I Cried: How I Had a Baby, a Breakdown, and a Much Needed Margarita by Heather Armstrong

The first 4 Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan (I’m planning on reading more this summer)

Captain Jack’s Woman by Stephanie Laurens

The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia Quinn

The Pioneer Woman Cooks by Ree Drummond

Why Evolution is True by Jerry A. Coyne

These are the books that I read last summer. As you can tell, I have fairly eclectic taste in books. I adore romance, like reading fantasy and some young adult, I will read the occasional non-fiction title if I find it interesting.

Please share your favorite books! I’ll be posting a list of the books I decide to read this summer soon! Thanks in advance!

I just read (and enjoyed) Babyproof, by Stephanie (I think) Giffin. It was pretty good as far as chick flick books go.
And of course I always have to recommend Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, which is coming out this summer. If you haven't read them you have to check them out!
I also just finished Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, which was really good, and I don't normally like Neil Gaiman (sometimes a little too weird for me).
Scarlett would recommend anything John Green, as well, though I don't LOVE his books the way she does.

I have also set myself up with a summer reading list of sorts. I'll let you know if any of them turn out as something I would recommend. See link below for the blog post of my list. 🙂

American Gods, Neil Gaiman if you haven't read it already.

If you're enjoying WoT you might also enjoy George RR Martin's Ice and Fire series that starts with Game of Thrones, or Terry Brooks' Shannara series though I would suggest reading them in the suggested order not in the chronological order. On the fantasy scale, Brooks is light without being frivilous, Jordan falls somewhere in the middle though on the heavy side and Martin is very heavy and graphic to boot, but I loved the series. A warning, the last book has been coming for five years and still doesn't have a release date.

If you like YA, I'd suggest The Hunger Games (and its sequel, Catching Fire), as well as The Book Thief. I LOVED all three of these, and am eagerly awaiting the third HG book!

I recommend Emily Griffin too (babyproof, something barrowed, something blue).

I’m currently reading the Jen Lancaster Series, hilarious chick lit. I’m on the first one – Bitter is the New Black.

I also liked American Wife. Loosely based on Laura Bush with some reference to her Librarian days.

Alabama! Did you get your MLIS there?

That's where the (underemployed) Bourgeois Librarian (that would be me) received her degree!
