I did some work in the garden this weekend. It’s definitely growing!
I’ve got more than 15 tomatoes beginning to grow and probably double that many flowers. I did have a bunch of zucchini flowers, but they’ve all died. I think I might be destined to not ever successfully grow zucchini. I’m thinking it’s not getting enough sun, but I haven’t been able to find much about successfully transplanting a mature zucchini plant. I may just have to pull it up and start again with a new one. It’s still early enough that I could get fruit by the end of June.
Given that our growing season is so long in Alabama (and if last year was any indication), I’ll still be picking stuff in November. Seriously. I picked my last tomato the first week in November. And then it snowed two days later. And by snow I mean, it flurried and we all got really excited and slightly panicky. Alabama is weird.
I also had to cut my parsley WAY back. It survived the winter but I didn’t take care of it and it’s massively overgrown. (Right side of the above picture, behind the front flower pot.) I’ve been trying to prune it the best I can without doing too much damage.
My basil is doing great, as is my cucumber plant. It’s got a bunch of flowers and keeps trying to overtake the rest of the garden so I’m thinking it’s good. 🙂 My eggplant hasn’t done anything but get taller and fuller, but I’m taking that as a good sign.
I lost a couple of marigolds so I added a few more, of a different variety. I’m worried that lack of pollination might be the root (haha get it?) of my zucchini problems, so attracting more pollinators is never a bad idea. I also added a dahlia. I don’t know if it will bring the bees, but it definitely brings some pretty color.
My only other woe is whatever happened to these tomatoes: Luckily, I can’t find any worms or other pests, but something got in there and took a bite. I picked the damaged ones off so they wouldn’t take up any more precious nutrients.

I would really love to plant a garden and we have a really great spot in our backyard, but:
1. I’ve never grown anything, other than mold
2. Rob doesn’t eat most vegetables
3. I had trouble fastening my shoes this morning, so I figure that may pose a problem when planting things
I know not being able to fasten your shoes isn’t funny, but I have this hysterical image in my head of you trying to do it. 🙂
Hehe, it was quite funny. My tongue was sticking out slightly, I was red in the face, and I was trying to turn every which way to reach the buckle thingy. It took a good 5 minutes.
