Staying Sane During the Holidays

in Christmas, holidays, How Tos, life

Ahhh!!!!

Does anyone else feel like screaming right about now?  I had a mini meltdown this afternoon thinking about all the things I need to do. Some of those things include:

  • Put away all the Christmas decoration boxes…from last week.  (oops)
  • Make, photograph, and blog about the 12 Days of Christmas Cookies
  • Finish Christmas shopping
  • Start making the homemade presents
  • Write and address my Christmas cards
  • Clean the house which is messy despite my best attempts

So obviously, I was a little stressed.  But then I started thinking.

Why am I so worried about all of this?  It’s only the second day of December!  I do like to my shopping done early to avoid the crowds and any last minute impulse buys, but other than that, none of this is that important.

Really.  NONE of this is truly important.  It’s all just stuff – things to do, ways to spend time and money…stuff.  Not important stuff. So after I finished my meltdown and gave myself a good talking to, I took a deep breath, picked up the kitty, sat in front of the Christmas tree, and watched Love Actually.

You can’t stay sane during the holidays by crowding your days with all the STUFF.  You stay sane by being with your family (unless, of course, they drive you insane 😉 ), enjoying Christmas music, watching sappy movies, people watching in the mall, and reminding yourself of the true meaning of the season, however you choose to celebrate it.

So take a deep breath, hug your kitty (or dog or kid or anyone close by and cuddly), and sit down for a few minutes.  There are still 24 hours in the day.  There are still actual weeks before Christmas arrives.  You’ll get everything done.  But do it later.  Right now just simply enjoy.

Ugh, I am *struggling* right now when it comes to Christmas. Rob has only put half of the Christmas lights up outside, so our house looks wonky. I can get our secondhand Christmas tree to fluff right, and the middle third of the pre-lit lights don’t work, and I have no idea how to put on more lights, and our Christmas topper bow is too big, and we don’t have a tree skirt, just a scrunched up piece of red lamé, and we probably don’t have enough ornaments. *inhale* And I’m still not done with Christmas shopping, because my parents are notoriously hard to buy for & I’m quickly running out of time and what little money I had to begin with. I’ve made 2 batches of Christmas treats & they both sucked. I am SUPER struggling with your & Christine’s Christmas gifts (I can get my crafty to come out). And I haven’t even started addressing Christmas cards (hopefully you’ll get yours, plus your Christmas present by New Years). *Sigh*

Ok, I feel a little better now. Plus, I put your birthday card in the mail today, so I’m a little head of schedule! 🙂

Love you & miss you,
A

I bet there is a YouTube video somewhere that will show you how to put on more lights. And I know I saw some cheap lights, ornaments, and tree skirts at Dollar General. Also, Michael’s has all their Christmas stuff 50% and you can usually find coupons online and in the paper. I got my tree skirt there last year for maybe $10 or $12.

I haven’t started my Christmas cards either. No sweat. They’ll all get done; just like everything else. 🙂
