House To-Do List for 2012

in i love a good list, life, the house

My friend Megg made one of these lists last year and kept us all updated on her progress.  I thought it was a really interesting idea, so I’m doing it too!

Remember my house that I bought at the end of 2010?  That I’m about to celebrate living in for one year?  That I rarely talk about?  Ring a bell?

Maybe this picture will help?

While it’s been decorated and filled with furniture, it still needs some work.  I’m by no means a decorating, but I do have a few ideas and changes that I want to make so my house will be the warm, welcoming place I want it to be.  So here are the changes/updates/purchases I’d like to make in 2012, divided by room.

Entry:
-Buy a new doorbell (mine works but is badly damaged)
-Buy a table or some artwork (or both!) for the foyer

Living Room:
-Determine if a window dressing is necessary and if so, what sort?
-Stain buffet

I was going to paint it, but decided staining was better for the future

Kitchen:
-Glass in two cabinets to display dishes and cookbooks
-Install an under-the-counter movable shelf for my stand mixer (like this one)
-Install lights under my upper cabinets
-Buy and hang a valance for the window by the kitchen table

The upper cabinets are the ones I want glassed in

Office:
-Hang magnetic board
-Frame and hang my street art from Italy

Guest Bedroom:
-Buy a new bed (mattress and maybe a headboard) so my parents can have the bed back
-Buy a comforter set for the new bed
-Stain or paint bedside table and/or bookcase to match the new look

Master Bedroom:
-Hang pictures that have been sitting on the floor for a year
-Get new curtains for the window
-Decide if I want any sort of art work over my bed and purchase it

See how short they are? Not good.

Random:
-Decide what to do about my landing.  Does it need furniture?  What kind?  Bigger artwork?  Should it stay bare?
-Put a shelving unit in the garage to clear up the clutter

My naked landing

So all of this sounds great, but expensive doesn’t it?  I’ve actually already got an ING savings account dedicated for doing all this work.  It doesn’t have a ton in it at the moment, but it’s going to be my main savings goal for the next 6 months or so.

What about you?  Are you planning any home improvements for 2012?
